In September 2023, our exceptional 15-year-old daughter received a diagnosis of autism. This diagnosis, which identifies her as a neuroatypical teen , brought a sense of relief in many ways. It provided us with an explanation for the difficulties she had faced when trying to connect with her peers over the years.
Since then, we've explored a variety of support options, including psychological and occupational therapies tailored for neuro atypical adolescents. However, we quickly realized that there was a significant void: there were no purely social activities for teens like her. She needed opportunities to simply be with others, to socialize, hang out, and potentially forge friendships with those who understand her unique way of interacting with people and the world around her.
To address this need, we're working to establish a new initiative: the "Not a Typical Brain Gathering Group." It's a space designed specifically for neuro atypical / neuro divergent teens to come together and enjoy social interactions in a comfortable and understanding environment.
Thank you to all the teens and their parents who came out to Fred Fletcher park in Raleigh for our 1st event "Fun at Fred Fletcher" - There were conversations, games and the surprise visit by the lone baby possum stole the show
We were excited by the turnout and are looking forward to providing more events soon
